Victorian silver and engraved glass claret jug
Victorian silver and engraved glass claret jug, by George Richards Elkington, the founder of Elkington and Company Ltd, who revolutionised the silver trade from the 1840's with the introduction of electroplating. This claret jug, made in silver, was also copied in silver plate towards the end of the 19th Century. Originals in silver with engraved glass such as this example, were of the finest quality, not only encompassing all the skills of the silversmith but also the tecnical excellence of the glass blower and engraver.
A rare find in excellent condition and worthy of our piece of the month.
